What bedding do I need for my newborn baby.

When preparing bedding for a newborn baby, it's important to prioritise safety and comfort. Here are some essential items you'll need:

  1. Cot or moses basket / bassinet: Choose a sturdy and safe cot or moses basket / bassinet. Ensure it has a firm mattress and a fitted sheet that snugly fits the mattress. Babies should be moved from a moses basket / bassinet once they are able to sit up.

  2. Mattress: Opt for a firm, flat mattress specifically designed for babies and infants. It should fit the cot or moses basket / bassinet snugly without any gaps around the edges.

  3. Fitted sheets: Use fitted sheets made specifically for cots or moses baskets / bassinets . Ensure they fit tightly around the mattress, without any loose fabric that could pose a suffocation hazard. Avoid using loose sheets or soft bedding, such as blankets, for infants and babies under one year old.

  4. Swaddling blankets and ZipMe Swaddles: Swaddling can provide comfort to newborns. Use lightweight, breathable blankets made of cotton or muslin for swaddling.  We also have the ZipMe Swaddle to make swaddling easier.

  5. Sleepsacks or Baby Sleeping Bags: Sleepsacks or Baby Sleeping Bags are a safer alternative to loose blankets. They provide warmth and security while eliminating the risk of suffocation. Choose sleepsacks  or Baby Sleeping Bags appropriate for the season and made of breathable fabric.

  6. Waterproof mattress covers: Place a waterproof mattress protector made specifically for cots or moses baskets / bassinets over the cot or moses basket / bassinet mattress to protect it from any accidents or spills. Ensure the cover fits securely and doesn't create any discomfort for the baby.

  7. Avoid pillows, bumpers, and stuffed animals: It's important to keep the sleep environment free from any items that could pose a suffocation or choking hazard. Pillows, cot bumpers, and stuffed animals should be kept out of the crib until the baby is older.

Remember to regularly check the bedding for any signs of wear or damage, and keep the sleeping area clear of any loose or excess fabric. Always follow safe sleep guidelines to create a safe sleeping environment for your newborn.
